As I continue on my assistive technology journey,
I will be taking a closer look at the various disabilities and the different
types of assistive technology that are available to assist people with special
needs. To begin, hearing assistive
technology is the term for assistive technology that helps people who have
hearing losses. It includes alerting
devices that indicate the presence of sound in the environment, such as alarm
clocks, smoke detectors, door chimes, and phone ringers. They each use a strobe lights or vibrations
to alert someone who is hard of hearing.
In the classroom, students who are hard of hearing also require
assistive technology in order to perform academically and to communicate with
their teachers and peers. Some devices that
can assist with communication are infrared systems, sound amplification systems,
and FM systems. These systems are
different ways that teachers can amplify their discussions using speakers and
microphones throughout the classroom so that the student who is hard of hearing
can be engaged in the lessons and be an active participant as well.
