Augmentive Communication

This post explains augmentive communication and why it is important.  Augmentive communication is about helping individuals who cannot speak to interact with others.  Augmentive communication systems can be unaided which only uses a person’s body for communication, or aided which involves the use of an external piece of equipment to convey a message.  Augmentive communication systems are important so that people have the opportunity to express their thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas.  Augmentive aids, such as picture and symbol communication boards and electronic devices allow for social interaction, better school performance, and it helps improve a person’s feelings of self-worth.

In my school district, I work with several students who are non-verbal and they use picture communication boards daily.  The communication boards allow them to communicate their bathroom needs, as well as, their feelings and moods.  Without this system in place, it would be difficult to understand what my students need and want, and it would also be impossible to accommodate them appropriately.  In my opinion, communication is so important, and without it people would not be able to effectively function in society.
